mega swerte The Liberty (and Their Fans) Celebrate With a New York City Parade
New York City turned out on Thursday to celebrate the W.N.B.A.’s newest champions, the Libertymega swerte, with a traditional ticker-tape parade in Lower Manhattan.
Over the decades, many a feat has been celebrated along the Canyon of Heroes, a stretch of Broadway between Bowling Green and City Hall. Astronauts, presidents and championship sports teams have all been honored with parades along the route. The Yankees have marched through nine times, the Mets three times and the Giants once.
The parade honoring the Liberty drew a large crowd. It began around 10 a.m. in Battery Park and traveled north to City Hall for a ceremony, with addresses from Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams.
“As the first woman governor, I love a women’s team that brings home the championship,” Hochul said.
Adams, recently indicted on federal corruption charges, seized the opportunity for distraction, making his way to the lectern to “Empire State of Mind,” a song he often walks out to.
Here’s what our photographers saw along the parade route and at City Hall.
